Tongue twisters

These are always wonderful for a giggle in class. Try your hand (and mouth!) at:

  • If two witches would watch two watches, which witch would watch which watch?
  • The ochre ogre ogled the poker
  • Don’t buy big black cats or blind bats’ blood!
  • Creepy crawler critters crawl through creepy crawly craters
  • Gobbling gargoyles gobbled gobbling goblins
  • Seven spindly spiders spin spooky silk speedily.
  • If big black bats could blow bubbles, how big of bubbles would big black bats blow?
  • Which witch wished which wicked wish?
  • Ghostly ghouls gather gleefully to golf on ghostly golf courses

Have a pumpkin and witch’s broom race

Pumpkin and broom race

Grab some brooms and a few small pumpkins, divide the class into teams, and let the races begin! Each witch must use a broom to push or roll the pumpkin on the ground to the finish line and back, passing it to the next witch in line to continue the race. The first team to complete the relay wins. Watch as they compete to see who can sweep their pumpkin across the finish line first!

Make straw skeletons

Why not include a quick biology lesson on the skeletal system? Introduce students to the major bones, such as the skull, spine, and ribcage, and explain how they work together to support the body and protect vital organs. It's a fun, spooky way to explore the framework that keeps us upright! Straws, cotton buds and pipe cleaners all make great materials. Download the free straw skeletons activity.

“I went trick-or-treating and I saw...”

Put a spooky spin on the classic memory game! Have students sit in a circle and take turns building a Halloween-themed story. The first student starts with, “I went trick-or-treating and I saw a ghost,” and the next student adds to it: “I went trick-or-treating and I saw a ghost and a haunted house.” The game continues with each student adding a new item while trying to remember everything that was said before. It's a fun and challenging way to boost memory skills while celebrating Halloween!

No Halloween is complete without the classic tradition of pumpkin carving. Get students in teams and encourage them to unleash their creativity by carving pumpkins. If carving isn’t possible, painting pumpkins is a fun alternative!
To make things even more exciting, turn it into a competition. Award prizes for the fastest, funniest, and most unique pumpkin designs. Encourage students to think outside the box, whether it’s carving a message, their favourite characters, or even historical figures. Extra points for those who capture the best likeness!
